Transparency Rankings

Compared to other states, Texas currently ranks near the top in terms of open and transparent government. The state’s award-winning transparency initiatives have earned praise and recognition from a number of groups, including (in order of most recent):

Sunshine Review: Sunshine Review online maintains a transparency report card that ranks state’s according to their level of achievement. The state’s current overall ranking is a “B.”


The U.S. Public Interest Research Group: The group’s reportrecognizes Texas as one of seven Leading States in the area of transparency.


Sunshine Week 2009: Texas was recognized as the most transparent state in the nation during Sunshine Week 2009, a national transparency initiative led by the American Society of Newspaper Editors.


Center for Digital Government: In 2008, the Center for Digital Government named the state’s expenditure database, Where the Money Goes, the Best Technology Solution Serving the Public.
